Greetings,
 
 I am Tanzania Lucas, the founder of Our Color's Purple. I was diagnosed with Lupus in 1997, at the age of 16.  At that time my aunt, Lillian Jones, had been living with it for over a decade.  Because she, and my extended family was familiar with Lupus and its complexities, I had a pool of knowledge and support to draw from that most newly diagnosed Lupus patients do not ever experience.  Our Color's Purple was created out of my empathetic compassion for those out there suffering alone. 

 

There is someone diagnosed with Lupus every thirty minutes, that's forty-eight people a day.  Out of the 17,520 a year, we believe there are hundreds and possibly thousands who have no idea what Lupus is or how to deal with it.  Lupus has not had a lot of exposure to main society, so the general public does not know what it is and sad to say many in the medical field have no direction on how to treat it.  However, when Lupus is mentioned someone always says, ‘I know someone with Lupus’.

 

That is why Our Color's Purple was established; to be an educational, informational, motivational loving support and safe place for those who need it.  Our Color's Purple is dedicated to serving our community of patients, doctors and loved ones.  

 

Our Color's Purple has adopted Dr. Kübler-Ross' stages of grief as an outline for our supportive efforts.  As a student of human development, I found myself in that pattern of grief as I was learning to live with Lupus.  Since then I have talked with many patients and their families about understanding, not only the disease but also living with it. My belief that we all go through this pattern seems to help those facing a Lupus diagnosis.
